Simon Holmes took over Axminster’s long established bookshop at the beginning of 2019. He set out to maintain all that was best about a truly beautiful and traditional old book store while adding value wherever he can. That has included mirroring the extensive shop stock in a new online store and promoting through social media. The delightful shop also now has a small browsers courtyard garden.
The Archway premises have been a bookshop for over 54 years and enjoy a strong local following as well as attracting many from further afield who simply appreciate the atmosphere and the unique smell of real books. While hardback and paperback fiction dominate the ground floor, there is also a children’s department and a separate young adult section. Local books have their own little area under the spiral staircase, which leads to a first-floor non-fiction department packed with biographies, history, crafts, sport, cookery, religion, health and wellbeing and more. The shop also offers greeting cards, maps, children’s toys and games. Simon and his little team are strong on advice – and there is a warm welcome also from his friendly little dog Pebbles.
